December Meeting: 2012-12-13

Just a reminder that Thursday the 13th of December is our regularly scheduled meeting. I’ll be at the LISA conference in California, so I won’t be able to make it. No topics are scheduled, so feel to meet or not as you wish. The pizza is still good, as well as the various beverages.

On a side note, the call for papers for BSDCan is out:

BSDCan 2013 will be held 17-18 May, 2013 in Ottawa at the University of
Ottawa. It will be preceded by two days of tutorials on 15-16 May.

NOTE: This will be Fri/Sat with tutorials on Wed/Thu.

We are now accepting proposals for talks.

The talks should be designed with a very strong technical content bias.
Proposals of a business development or marketing nature are not
appropriate for this venue.

If you are doing something interesting with a BSD operating system,
please submit a proposal. Whether you are developing a very complex
system using BSD as the foundation, or helping others and have a story
to tell about how BSD played a role, we want to hear about your
experience.  People using BSD as a platform for research are also
encouraged to submit a proposal. Possible topics include:

* How we manage a giant installation with respect to handling spam.
* and/or sysadmin.
* and/or networking.

From the BSDCan website, the Archives section will allow you to review
the wide variety of past BSDCan presentations as further examples.

Both users and developers are encouraged to share their experiences.

The schedule is:

1 Dec 2012 Proposal acceptance begins
19 Jan 2013 Proposal acceptance ends
19 Feb 2013 Confirmation of accepted proposals

October Meeting 2012

Just a friendly reminder that this Thursday is the second Thursday of the month and we will be meeting at Cafe Colonnade downtown.

Official end time: 20:00 (people usually start drifting at 19:00 unless they are engaged in a conversation)

Topics:

It’s fall.  Here are a few ideas that fell out of my head:

  • FreeNAS has a new beta out. Might be interesting to play with it
  • I did a recent on GPG talk at OCLUG, along with a key signing. If anyone is interested in having keys signed, bring along appropriate ID and we’ll sign some keys, or at least exchange info so that we can sign keys.
  • Is there a BSD equivalent of MythTV? I’ve found XBMC for BSD. Are there any others anyone has played with? I want to build my own after being less than enthused with the limitations of the other systems I have played with.
  • Other items? Anyone have experience with second displays for laptops? I have seen a few advertised as well as using an iPad with OSX so that you can do a small presentation with no ned for a projector
  • picoProjectors? Anyone play with one of those yet?
  • Dan has announced the dates for BSDCan 2013. It will be May 15 to 18 at UofO. This will be the 10th anniversary.

See you on Thursday!
